We've put together our top five tips for building the best stronghold base in Valheim.

Building a strong base is one of the most important aspects of survival in Valheim. Players will need a place to dump their unused supplies, craft upgrades, and retire at the end of a long day of adventuring. However, creating such a place can be intimidating to those not familiar with free builds or the survival genre.

Don't worry, we've been there, and we've returned with some advice to help warriors establish their home away from Valhöll.

Valheim Building Tips

1. Yes, You Do Need That Many Chests

You're going to need at least twice the number of chests you think you will. Trust us. It's better to gather a chest full of wood and store it than run out when you need it most.

2. Lay the Floor First

While it may be tempting to throw up walls before setting the groundwork, we recommend parsing out your floor tiles, first. This will give you a more accurate idea of just how much space you'll have inside to work with.

3. Group Important Pieces Together

This one is a no-brainer. It makes sense to keep similar pieces of furniture and crafting improvements together for ease of access. Some bases have dedicated crafting yards or buildings exclusively holding mead ingredients. This makes gathering appropriate materials and heading to their crafting stations much quicker—possibly evading the encumbered condition.

4. Think Outside the Box

Valheim has a relatively relaxed building system that allows players to craft nearly anything they can imagine. Use this to your advantage! You don't just have to stick to basics—add a second floor or watchtower balcony for more room and easier surveillance. Turn your outdoor campfire into a chimney so it never goes out in the rain. The only boundaries are the stacks of materials you have on hand.

5. Don't Be Afraid

As you progress through Valheim, you'll find more recipes and resources become available to you. It's not uncommon for this to affect how you see your base structured, what you want to place, and more. Fortunately, Valheim is extremely forgiving and will give you back your resources upon destruction. Feel free to experiment and rebuild as many times as you'd like.
