Adaptive Force in League of Legends has been a point of contention for new players, and even some returning veterans who are still unfamiliar with the new mastery system.

Every time you are completing your masteries, the bottom three smaller masteries are always shown as seen above. This area allows the choice to pick minor stats: adaptive force, attack speed, flat health, armor, and cooldown reduction.

Adaptive force gives the champion a bonus of either attack damage or ability power, depending of those two stats are higher for the champion.

For a champion like Syndra, you will most definitely gain a bonus in ability power. For a champion like Sett, you are sure to get a bonus in attack damage. In a case where you are playing Shaco jungle, and decide to build AP - the bonus Shaco would normally get to AD now adapts into an AP bonus, in accordance with your build.

At the end of the day, the rule of thumb is: whatever the higher stat of either AP or AD is, the champion will then get the adaptive force bonus of the higher stat.
