What is tap strafing in Apex Legends?

The Apex Legends community has always prided themselves on the freedom of movement that the game's engine allows. Sliding, climbing, wall-bouncing, and air strafing have all become integral parts of how many players approach the game. But Respawn has made the decision to remove one specific movement technique because of its inaccessibility: tap strafing.

Most console players have not encountered tap strafing and likely never will because it is currently only possible on PC and Respawn has decided to remove tap strafing from the game.

What is Tap Strafing in Apex Legends?

In the simplest terms possible, tap strafing is a movement mechanic that allows PC players to push air strafing to unprecedented levels. With tap strafing, players are able to completely redirect their movement in the air nearly instantaneously. Tap strafing works because of a mechanic in the game's engine dubbed "lurch."

In the first moments of a player's jump they are able to press a movement key and have that input's momentum added to their movement in the air. By binding a movement to the scroll wheel on a mouse players were able to stack these "lurches" resulting in movement that could be impressive to watch and difficult to predict.

Tap strafing is not possible on console because the "lurch" mechanic that makes it possible on PC does not occur when the same directional inputs are executed on the analog sticks of a controller.
