The Black Knife Assassin's are optional field bosses found in a few locations, but it's the one in the Black Knife Catacombs which will drop the dagger. Usually when fighting these Assassin's you can summon spirits to help you, but not in the Black Knife Catacombs - so be prepared.

You'll also likely run into some skeletons and giant crabs along the way to the Black Knife Assassin.
