Which Genshin Impact characters are free?

In a game such as Genshin Impact, where spending money is perhaps as big of a resource as players' own time when it comes to acquiring the best of the best that the game has to offer, it's no surprise that many are wondering if there are any freebies that they can at least start out with. Here's a breakdown of which characters are free to obtain in Genshin Impact.

Which Genshin Impact Characters Are Free?

At the time of writing, there are seven free characters that players have been able to get without without breaking the bank or spending loads of Acquainted Fates or Intertwined Fates in Genshin Impact:

  • Traveler
  • Amber
  • Kaeya
  • Lisa
  • Barbara
  • Xiangling
  • Aloy

While the Traveler is a Sword user who is unlocked right off the bat, Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa makeup the starter characters that are obtained after completing the Prologue chapter of the Archon quest that takes place in Mondstadt.

Amber is a Pyro Bow user and is unlocked by complete the Wind-Riding Knight quest. Kayo, a Cryo Sword user is added after completing Crash Course, and the Electro Catalyst specialist Lisa is gained after complete the quest Sparks Amongst the Pages.

Meanwhile, the Hydro Catalyst wielder Barbara is recruited by those Adventure Rank 18 or above who complete the quest A Long Shot, and Pyro Polearm user Xiangling joins when players reach Adventure Rank 20 and complete Floor 3 Chamber 3 of the Spiral Abyss.

As part of first collaboration in Genshin Impact, Guerrilla Games' Aloy from the Horizon Zero Dawn series is a 5-Star Cryo Bow user that was obtainable from the Mail on PC, PlayStation 4, and PS5 before 2.3 update.

Outside of Aloy, all of these are 4-star characters that can also be purchased from Paimon’s Bargains when they enter the current rotation.
