Jakob "YamatoCannon" Mebdi joined League Champions Korea team SANDBOX Gaming on Friday, becoming the first Western coach to head up a team in the South Korean league.
"We are delighted to announce that a former Team Vitality head coach and LEC analyst Jakob "YamatoCannon" Mebdi has been appointed as the new head coach of SANDBOX Gaming," the team wrote on Twitter on Friday.
Best known for his time coaching Team ROCCAT, Splyce and Team Vitality in the League of Legends European Championship, YamatoCannon has coached League of Legends teams dating back to January 2015, when he led MeetYourMakers. After five years as a coach, he transitioned into an analyst position for the LEC in January 2020. He joins SANDBOX from that position.
YamatoCannon has coached the team remotely from his home in Europe while waiting for his South Korean visa to be approved and for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to allow for his relocation to Seoul.
SANDBOX Gaming finished ninth overall in the 2020 spring split, the lowest in organizational history. It retained its spot in the LCK by defeating Seorabeol Gaming in the 2020 LCK Summer Promotion tournament.
