Death Stranding 2 is a PS5 exclusive, and Kojima Productions has made full use of the power of both PS5 and PS5 Pro. It’s refreshing to see a big-budget game so clearly optimized and built specifically for a system, and as a result, Death Stranding 2’s two graphics mode options are both incredibly pleasing. There are no downsides to your decision this time, both modes will offer a good experience depending on what you’re looking for.

In this guide we’re quickly breaking down which graphics mode is best for your Death Stranding 2: On The Beach experience, with some extra details courtesy of Digital Foundry on Eurogamer.

PS5 Performance VS Quality mode breakdown – DS2

Performance mode on the base PS5 console offers a reasonably sharp 1440p internal resolution, which is pretty remarkable for a that looks as good as this one. Performance mode holds steady at 60fps no matter the task, and is a fantastic way to play if you want fluid gameplay.

If you are playing on a large 4K screen however, you may find some of the details a bit too blurry, in which case the Quality mode inches closer to a 4K image, and is also a reasonable choice with steady 30fps playback.

For the base PS5, we recommend the excellent Performance mode, but Quality mode might be a good choice for some players.

PS5 Pro Performance VS Quality mode breakdown – DS2

Those that shelled out for a PS5 Pro can enjoy even higher resolutions that the base PS5 offers, with what appears to be PSSR in play to help smooth over the edges. Aside from some very minor shimmering on select details, Performance mode on PS5 Pro looks genuinely incredible — this might be the best-looking game on the most powerful console on the market, running at a smooth 60fps.

If those tiny shimmering details do annoy you, Quality mode is a decent option, but Performance mode comes so close to matching the image quality that moving down to 30fps feels like a waste.

On PS5 Pro we absolutely recommend the beautiful Performance mode, with Quality mode feeling ultimately unnecessary.
