Best Pokémon for Chi-Yu Tera Raid: how to beat the shiny Chi-Yu event

The Pokémon Company is in the middle of a batch of special event raids in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that could see players rewarded with rare and exclusive shiny variants of legendary Pokémon for the first time. The first of these raids saw players facing off against a shiny Wo-Chien, while the second saw players taking down a shiny Chien-Pao, and the third had players tackling a shiny Ting-Lu – all of which were ultimately successful – and now it’s time for the fourth and final of the legendary Treasure Pokémon, Chi-Yu.
This guide will give you everything you need to know about Chi-Yu’s move set and the best counters for it in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Shiny Chi-Yu raid stats, moves – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
WIth the Chi-Yu event raid live, we have the full details for the powerful legendary Pokémon below:
Shiny Chi-Yu – Level 75
- Nature: Modest
- Ability: Beads of Ruin
- Tera Type: Fire
- Moves: Heat Wave, Flamethrower, Snarl, Dark Wave, Ruination
Chi-Yu, like its counterparts, has a frustrating ability called Beads of Ruin, which lowers the special defense of opposing Pokémon by 25%. This means Chi-Yu – a powerful special attacker – does a lot more damage, but its low level as a 5 star raid means it’s not too difficult to deal with as long as we’re careful.
Chi-Yu will use Ruination twice throughout the raid, which halves the HP of a Pokémon selected at random. It also has powerful Fire-type moves, an annoying status move, and Dark Pulse, which is quite powerful.
Best counters for shiny Chi-Yu – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
With all we know about Ting-Lu, we need a Pokémon that can take some special attacks without much hassle, something that can deal super effective damage against Fire-types, and survive the raid. With that in mind, here are our picks:
Azumarill
Azumarill is a raiding staple, with a big attack stat thanks to its fearsome Huge Power ability, which doubles its physical attack power, and Belly Drum, which halves its HP for an instant +6 attack boost. It’s also got some great moves for taking down Chi-Yu, with its Water typing really coming in handy.
Here’s our set for Azumarill:
Azumarill – Level 100
- Item: Shell Bell
- Nature: Adamant
- Ability: Huge Power
- Tera Type: Water
- Moves: Belly Drum, Liquidation, Rain Dance, Light Screen
Azumarill’s main combo is Belly Drum followed by Liquidation, which deals absolutely massive damage — but you probably don’t want to start with that. Instead, we’d recommend setting up Rain Dance or Light Screen, or both, as they will drastically lower Chi-Yu’s special attacking power. You can also use Liquidation to build up your Tera charge and potentially lower Chi-Yu’s defense.
Once Chi-Yu puts up its shields, you’re safe to Terastalize, then Belly Drum and Liquidation, with the held Shell Bell recovering massive HP on each hit. This is a solo-viable strategy, but it works better if you team up with other Azumarill.
Milotic
Milotic is another great choice for this raid, thanks to its massive special defense stat and strong attacking capabilities, as well as a handy ability in Competitive, which boosts your special attack stat by two stages whenever a stat is dropped, which will likely happen with Snarl often.
Here’s our set for Milotic:
Milotic – Level 100
- Item: Shell Bell
- Nature: Calm
- Ability: Competitive
- Tera Type: Water
- Moves: Rain Dance, Hydro Pump, Surf, Recover
Milotic’s strategy is very straightforward. Set up Rain Dance on the first turn, then use Surf – benefitting from the rain boost – to build up Tera charge. Once the shields go up, Terastalize and start firing off Hydro Pumps to go for the win.
Use Recover as needed to heal HP if things ever get dicey, but with Milotic’s high special defense stat it shouldn’t be needed. Again, this is solo viable, but it’s always better to have more Pokémon around.
