Umamusume stats explanation and best stats for each race type
By Marco Wutz

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a little less straightforward in some areas than other gacha games — and that includes explaining what the stats of each character actually do. Of course, we have a general idea of what things like Speed and Stamina mean and should theoretically do, but we also have the option of upgrading attributes like Guts and Wit, which are a bit more ambiguous.

Here’s an explanation of all the stats in Umamusume and their effects — and which of them are best for each type of runner.
Umamusume stats explained
All characters in Umamusume have five stats: Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit. Leveling up the right stats is crucial for a successful run in career mode, so you’ll need to know what you are looking at if you want to become a successful trainer.
- Speed: This increases the Umamusume’s top speed during the entire race.
- Stamina: This increases the duration an Umamusume can maintain her top speed.
- Power: This increases the speed at which an Umamusume can reach her top speed at the expense of consuming Stamina.
- Guts: This increases the Umamusume’s ability to keep her top speed in the final phase even if her Stamina runs out.
- Wits: This increases the rate at which the Umamusume can activate her skills, helps her find more favorable positions and manage Stamina consumption, and lowers her chance of getting Rushed.
There are two other stats that come up during career mode: Energy and Mood.
Energy is a resource that’s consumed by training and some events. Training with a low Energy count can lead to the training’s failure, which not only wastes a precious turn but can also lead to injuries – which are permanent debuffs for a run – and stat losses. Energy doesn’t affect the performance during a race, though.
Mood can be Awful at worst and Great at best — and you’ll want it to be Great, because Mood will affect both the stat gains during training and the performance during races. Umamusume in a positive Mood will grow much stronger and get better results than those in a bad Mood.
Best stats for Sprint race Umamusume
- Speed
- Power
- Wit
If you’re looking to build a strong Umamusume for Sprint races, you’ll want to prioritize Speed and Power. Having the maximum possible top speed is important for all Umamusume. Since Sprints are short distance races, you’ll want your Umamusume to reach her top speed quickly and not get stuck behind the competition. Power helps with all of that, as it increases athletes’ acceleration and leads to better positioning, allowing an Umamusume to break through packs with ease.
Note, however, that you shouldn’t have too much Power in relation to Speed. Power consumes Stamina, so having an excess amount of it will not only not be helpful, but actively harm you in races, especially when they go longer.
Wit is always of secondary importance due to its useful effects, while Stamina and Guts aren’t as much of a factor here because of the short distance. In Senior Year, you should hit at least 400 Stamina (D+ to C) to avoid any trouble.
Best stats for Mile race Umamusume
- Speed
- Power
- Wit
Mile races are a bit longer than Sprints, but generally favor the same skill set. You’ll want to get as much Speed as possible and the Power to reach your top speed quickly — especially if you play as a Pace Chaser or End Closer, which sometimes need to break through packs.
Once again, Wit is important to trigger your skills, while Stamina and Guts gain importance due to the increased distance, but remain your lowest priority. In Senior Year, you should hit at least 600 Stamina (C to C+) to avoid running out of breath. Guts is a great fallback for those favoring Late Spurts.
Best stats for Medium race Umamusume
- Speed
- Power
- Stamina / Wit
Medium races are where Stamina starts to become a more pronounced factor next to Speed and Power, which remain your top priorities. Here, too, Power is especially important for Pace Chasers and End Closers. Wit remains as crucial as ever to get lots of skill activations and manage Stamina.
In Senior Year, you should hit at least 700 Stamina (B) to avoid any trouble and get some Guts into the mix to cover any weaknesses in this regard in the final phase of a race, especially for Late Spurts and Front Runners.
Medium is probably the most difficult distance to train Umamusume for, as it requires a good mix of everything, though choosing a strategy and specializing your Umamusume in it helps manage those requirements.
Best stats for Long race Umamusume
- Speed
- Stamina
- Wit
Long distance races finally favor Stamina over Power as the most important stat next to Speed. Since Umamusume will run for much longer, acceleration isn’t that big of a deal and Power will only sap valuable Stamina over the course of a race. In Senior Year, you should hit at least 800 Stamina (B+) to sustain your Umamusume over the distance with some Guts to avoid losing the win in the final stretch.
While Pace Chasers and End Closers will still want some Power to overtake competitors, it’s definitely a lower priority for everyone else. That’s not so for Wit, which remains an incredibly important asset throughout a race. Since the Rushed debuff consumes additional Stamina, it’s especially crucial to avoid it during long races.
