Battlefield 6 will avoid goofy crossover skins, keep its visuals grounded

It’s a wild ride these days to look at screenshots from Call of Duty — guys wearing ridiculous costumes are shooting Beavis and Butthead and, oh, look, there’s Godzilla and Lionel Messi over there. That’s something EA and DICE want to avoid with Battlefield 6, its design director Shashank Uchil told DBLTAP at the BF6 multiplayer reveal event in London.
“It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was — it was all soldiers, on the ground. It’s going to be like this,” Uchil said, pointing at the key art featuring soldiers in soldier gear looking out over a wartorn New York City.
He added: “I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.”
BF3 and BF4 – some of the most popular games in the franchise – are the main guiding lights for the upcoming iteration in other ways as well. For example, the ability to steal other players’ dog tags during a melee kill will return.
However, BF6 will make substantial changes to fundamental systems: Every class will be able to access all weapons in the game, instead of being restricted to a certain selection — naturally, it’s a controversial decision among the community.
Uchil explained that despite the openness of the system, “it’s going to be better for you to pick the weapons for your class.” This is because each class comes with a set of passive perks that boost the performance of signature weapons. While, say, a Medic can pick up a sniper rifle, the weapon will be very difficult to handle. A Scout, on the other hand, automatically reduces things like sway, making the weapon much more effective in their hands.
“There’s always a choice,” Uchil said. “You can do anything you want, but if you pick the right weapons, it makes your life easier.”
An upcoming open beta test for BF6 will feature playlists with this new system as well as the old class-based system. Uchil also provided some insight on the game’s destruction system and map design.
