Crosswind developer defends Ubisoft over Skull and Bones
By Marco Wutz

Crosswind Crew, the team behind upcoming pirate survival-crafting game Crosswind, is very sympathetic to the teams responsible for Skull and Bones, Ubisoft’s ‘quadruple-A’ pirate folly.
Asked about Skull and Bones during a demonstration of Crosswind at Gamescom 2025, the crew member told DBLTAP: “I believe that was a very difficult project for the team and, being a game developer myself, I know what a difficult route they took. I really appreciate the effort of the team that managed to ship the game.”
Skull and Bones was delayed so many times due to its troubled development process that it became an internet meme before eventually releasing in 2024. Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the game ended up being relatively unsuccessful, which earned the company more mockery due to one executive’s statement that the title would be the world’s first ‘quadruple-A’ game.
Crosswind Crew went on to defend Ubisoft further, saying that it gets a lot of undeserved hate: “There were a lot of complaints, but I think Ubisoft gets a lot of complaints that they do not deserve. This is a great company and if you look at the Assassin's Creed games, for example, they get a lot of very bad PR, and this is completely undeserved, because there are like two or three companies in the world that could create games like this.”
This is not the only occasion on which DBLTAP heard fellow industry members defend the struggling giant at the event. In an interview with Amplitude’s leadership, co-founder and CEO Romain de Waubert de Genlis credited Ubisoft with nurturing France’s talented game development community. On the bright side for Ubisoft, Anno 117: Pax Romana looks like it’s destined for success.
