EA sets date for Anthem server shutdown

BioWare’s online folly is being put to sleep.

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it will shut down the servers for BioWare’s Anthem for good. The sci-fi RPG will remain playable until January 12, 2026, and then close its gates. The title will not be playable offline, so once the deadline has passed that’ll be it for the title.

All premium currency purchases in the game have been disabled, though players can still use whatever remaining balance they have to buy items. Anthem will also vanish from EA Play on August 15, 2025.

EA emphasized that no jobs at BioWare will be affected by this decision — a welcome bit of news, given the fresh layoffs at Microsoft and Build A Rocket Boy.

Released in February 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, the online sci-fi RPG was supposed to be BioWare’s big live-service hit. Though it didn’t do too shabby in terms of sales with over five million copies wandering over the counter, it did not meet EA’s commercial expectations. A huge gameplay overhaul announced in 2020 never happened, development being halted in 2021.

Although critics and fans liked Anthem’s visual and combat as well as its movement mechanics, the game disappointed in the aspects they expected a BioWare game to be stronger in, namely story and general gameplay aspects.
