Helldivers 2’s Super President is dead and players think a coup is happening

It looks like the turmoil won’t stop once the Illuminate are defeated.

It’s a turbulent and exciting time to play Helldivers 2: The alien Illuminate have invaded Super Earth and pushed its defenders to the brink of exhaustion, taking one city after another with a sheer endless supply of troops. However, the noble sacrifice of the defenders of Super Earth’s version of New York bought the Helldivers enough time to get additional defensive weapons online and accelerate the attrition suffered by the Illuminate.

Following the fall of the city, the remaining Helldivers concentrated on the planet’s version of Shanghai, which players from China had held on to with an iron will. With the help of Western reinforcements, they pushed back the Illuminate, essentially liberating it and turning it into a bloodbath for the invaders.

With only Equality-on-Sea and Prosperity City – Super Earth’s capital – left standing, the fleet was finally ground down — but not before inflicting one last injury on Super Earth: It looks like the Super President has fallen during the defense of Prosperity City, the official news report stating that he was killed while defending the presidential bunker.

Players, however, are smelling a conspiracy: With the Super President dead, the office’s powers have been vested into the Ministry of Defence. Some Helldivers believe that the President dying had nothing to do with the Illuminate and is instead a coup by the Ministry of Defence, which used the invasion to cover up its actions.

We’ll see what Arrowhead has cooked up for the aftermath of the attack on Super Earth, but it’ll prove interesting in any case — for have not the Helldivers earned the right to vote with all their deeds? Some players are already making suggestions for presidential candidates and it’d be a logical continuation of Helldivers 2’s satirical themes to have users participate in Super Earth’s farcical ‘democratic’ process.

Despite some hiccups, such as Chinese players review-bombing the game on Steam due to misunderstanding the mission objectives (they were very upset that they couldn’t fully liberate Equality-on-Sea and then help the rest of the world), the most recent mega event in Helldivers 2 seems to have been a monumental success, creating a lot of hype among players and successfully fielding several new operation mechanics.
