Nintendo appears to look for more box office success with Donkey Kong
By Marco Wutz

The success of Super Mario Bros. in cinemas worldwide seems to have encouraged Nintendo to look for even more box office hits: Next to the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie and Super Mario Bros. sequel, it appears as if a Donkey Kong movie is in the works as well.
Nintendo and Universal have registered copyright for an “Untitled Donkey Kong Project” in the motion picture category.
The cooperation between Nintendo and Universal on a Donkey Kong movie is particularly funny, because Universal once filed a lawsuit against the Japanese company, arguing that DK’s name was too similar to King Kong — it lost this particular legal bout (which involved a lawyer named Kirby, to make the matter even funnier), and now they’re partnered up to bring DK to the big screen.
Donkey Kong already appeared in Super Mario Bros. with Seth Rogan playing the character and an all-new title starring the necktie-wearing monkey – Donkey Kong Bananza – is set to come to Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, 2025.
