Leash on Bungie is getting tightened.

Marathon, Sony’s next grand live-service gambit, is expected to be released before the end of March 2026, according to the company’s CFO, Lin Tao. Speaking at the press conference that accompanied Sony’s latest financial report, she said that “We are now fixing the problems” and reiterated that “We believe this launch will happen.”

Naturally, that release window is not final yet and things might yet change, but the CFO stated her confidence in a new release date being announced some time in Fall 2025.

Initially expected to be launched in September 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Bungie delayed its next game to address community feedback and test data.

While the work on Marathon continues, Sony is tightening its leash around Bungie. According to Tao, the studio’s integration into PlayStation Studios is proceeding smoothly, which will decrease Bungie’s independence in the long term.

Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion USD in 2022, arguing that the studio would help its push into live-service games and boost the company’s efforts across platforms.

Bungie was mostly left to its own devices at first, but Marathon’s troubled development, internal scandals, and other management issues have eroded Sony’s confidence in this approach, so a restructuring program was announced last year to kick off Bungie’s integration into PlayStation Studios, where Sony will have more control over what’s happening at the developer.
