Creative Assembly has unveiled some of the details around the next major update for Total War: Warhammer 3, Update 6.2. It will bring a long-awaited rework of the magic item system that will change all of the items currently in the game — that’s over 800 pieces of equipment.

Along with a thorough balancing pass on all of this gear, the systems for obtaining, fusing, and crafting magic items will receive changes. In general, Update 6.2 will lower the item drop rate, making each acquired piece of gear more valuable (and stopping players from being drowned by trashy equipment), but will also make the drop system smarter.

Instead of throwing items at you in a truly random manner, the game will understand what you already have, what you are using, and what you may want, rewarding you with drops based on all that. Fusing items will also be more targeted in the future, so the product of an item fusion is going to be of the same category as its parents. There will also be a chance to create unique items when fusing rare items. You’ll also be able to equip the same banner on an army several times.

In addition, five brand-new unique items will be added to the game:

  • Wyrmslayer Sword
  • Scintillating Shield
  • Accursed Armor
  • Briarsheath
  • The Fellblade – this one is being upgraded to a unique item
  • The Eight Burning Books of Khorne

Khorne’s books are an especially interesting addition: They are split into four items (each of them representing two tomes) and come with some pretty hefty consequences depending on what faction you’re playing — but CA is teasing a massive payoff for anyone collecting them.

The developer also revealed some details on the two free units players can expect to get with Update 6.2, Hobgoblin Bolt Throwers and Blood Knights (Sword and Shield).

Hobgoblin Bolt Throwers will be available to the Chaos Dwarfs and supplement their line-up of siege weapons with a cheap option that’s perfect for secondary garrison or raiding forces. The Blood Knights (Sword and Shield) will be a powerful addition to the Vampire Counts, combining massive anti-infantry capabilities with enhanced staying power. These knights will perform worse against other cavalry units than their brethren equipped with lances, but fare much better in any sustained engagements with foot troops.

CA recently revealed the name of the next Total War: Warhammer 3 DLC, Tides of Torment, and confirmed Sayl the Faithless as one of its Legendary Lords.
