Every Horse Pokemon in the Entire Pokemon Franchise

Generation 1

Rapidash from Generation 1
Generation 1 truly set the standard for horse Pokemon moving forward. / The Pokemon Company

There are only two horse Pokemon within Generation 1:

  • #077 — Ponyta
  • #078 — Rapidash

Generation 1 truly set the standard for horse Pokemon moving forward. Ponyta and Rapidash are very much the archetypes to follow as generations continue to expand upon and add to the subspecies. Unfortunately, trainers won’t see much of that right away, as this pair would go on to become the only members available from 1996 to 2010.

Generation 2 — Generation 4: The Great Horse Drought

God Arceus why
Generations 2 through 4 contain no horse Pokemon / The Pokemon Company

Just as the title suggests, Generations 2 through 4 contain no horse Pokemon. It is worth mentioning, however, that Ponyta and Rapidash do crop up in these generations’ games. For example, both can be found in the Sinnoh region shortly after the player finds the Daycare Center.

Honorable mentions include:

  • #203 — Girafarig, the giraffe
  • #234 — Stantler, the deer
  • #493 — Arceus, the vaguely horse-shaped god

Generation 5

Zebstrika
As developers return to their horse roots, the next additions to the subspecies take a wild turn. / The Pokemon Company

There are three horse-like Pokemon in Generation 5:

  • #522 — Blitzle
  • #523 — Zebstrika
  • #647 — Keldeo

As developers return to their horse roots, the next additions to the subspecies take a wild turn in the form of Blitzle and Zebstrika — two electric-type zebras. Generation 5 also adds the mini-unicorn, Keldeo, who is still technically a horse under Rapidash’s rules.

Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion have been excluded from this list as they are a goat, cow, and deer, respectively. Would it not have been for Blitzle, Zebstrika, and Keldo breaking the drought, they would have been added to the honorable mentions list.

Generation 6: The Muddy Era

Mudsdale
Generation 6 has been christened as the “Muddy Era” thanks to its two additions: Mudbray and Mudsdale. / The Pokemon Company

Only two horse-like Pokemon exist in Generation 6:

  • #749 — Mudbray
  • #750 — Mudsdale

Generation 6 has been christened as the “Muddy Era” thanks to its two additions: Mudbray and Mudsdale. Mudbray has been included in this list due to its resemblance of a donkey — an animal that, in real life, is classified under the horse Family, Equidae. Meanwhile, Mudsdale fits right in as a Clydesdale-dupe.

Generation 7

Spectrier
These are, perhaps, the most “horse-y” of the species since the Kanto region / The Pokemon Company

There are, again, two-horse Pokemon in Generation 7. These are, perhaps, the most “horse-y” of the species since the Kanto region:

  • #896 — Glastrier
  • #897 — Spectrier

Both Glastrier and Spectrier are the steeds of Calyrex, the kingly Pokemon from Crown Island. Fans may be interested to know that these Generation 7 additions get their name from ”destrier,” a type of war horse from the Middle Ages known for carrying its rider into battle. Destriers were not a breed but rather a specific category of horse with strong hindquarters, a well arched-neck, and a convex “Roman nose” head profile.
