When players fall to their first deaths in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, they will find that the Gulag has been revamped pretty drastically.

From the new symmetrical, small-scale arena to the 2v2 format, here's a breakdown of how the Gulag works in Warzone 2.

Warzone 2 Gulag Explained

The first thing to note about the new Gulag is that it is designed for 2v2 combat. Although players will still get sent to the Gulag as usual after dying before the final circle closes, they will now be randomly paired up with another player from the lobby. This is where Proximity Chat truly comes into play.

There are two ways to win the Gulag in Warzone 2. One is simply coordinating with your teammate to takeout the other two players. All players will receive a predefined Loadout — this will be a Pistol or Shotgun, a Lethal Grenade and a Tactical Grenade — with other highly effective weaponry and gear available to be picked up toward the center.

The second, new way to win the Gulag, however, adds some pretty major wrinkles to the whole ordeal. Sometime during the duel, an AI-controlled Jailer will jump down onto the circular platform. The Jailer has increased health compared to a normal player, as well as a Minigun. Eliminating the Jailer returns all four Gulag entrants back into the game, which means that it is possible to try and persuade the other team to agree to a cease-fire and focus on eliminating the Jailer.

As far as the new Gulag arena itself, the map is described as a roughly symmetrical, small-scale arena. Per Activision, in between the two spawn areas is a raised courtyard on one wall and an open courtyard with a circular platform on the other. The middle lane is completely open, besides a set of gallows on one side and a platform on the other.

Lastly, those who do get unlucky in the Gulag can be bought back by their teammates at any Buy Station.
