How to Read Defenses in Madden 20

How do you read a defense in Madden 20? If you recently picked up a new copy of Madden 20 and this is your first introduction to the Madden franchise, then you might not know how to read your opponent's defense. This integral part of decision making and strategy in Madden can make or break your ability to win a game. Here is how you can read defenses in Madden 20.

How to Read Defenses in Madden 20

Reading defenses is based on observing defensive decisions and positions made pre-snap (before play has been started). For example, you may look at how the defense is lined up or what stances are in to determine what defensive plays they will be making.

One aspect of your opponents defense you want to look what kind of coverage is in the middle of the field. The middle of the field can have open or closed coverage. You can determine the type of coverage in the middle of the field by the location of your opponent's safeties. If one safety is located towards the middle of the field in a high position, it is middle of the field closed coverage. If they have two safeties in high and split positions, they are probably running middle of the field open coverage.

Another part of an opponents defense that you would want to look at is how many players are in the box or how many defensive players are lined up at the line of scrimmage. Typically, when a defense is stacked at the box, they go for a blitz play.

Of course, the main difficulty in reading your opponents defense comes with tricks or adjustments that will keep you guessing on their defensive strategy. However, as you play more games of Madden, you will begin to pick up on these disguises as your understanding of the game improves.

Hopefully with these few tips you now have a better understanding of your opponent's defense and can score more touchdowns!
