Onix in Pokemon GO is one of the handful of Pokemon that require a certain item to evolve. Onix is a hot topic amongst Pokemon Go players, largely because of the Evolution Event going on right now, offering players a unique way to do exactly what this guide's all about: EVOLVE AN ONIX!

Onix Evolution Information

For the unaware or uninitiated, Onix's only evolution is into the impressive Steelix; a Pokemon with twice the style and half the naming originality. A Steel/Ground type with an outrageous 2414 max HP (according to Pokemon Go Hub), this stalwart serpent works incredibly well with moves like Iron Tail and Heavy Slam since his large health pool will give you time to get the damage out. With the basics out of the way, let's get into getting you one.

How to Evolve Onix

There's currently two reputable methods to getting your hands on a Steelix through evolution. The first is the most common, and the most tedious; evolution through candy. A player with enough time on their hands could catch, battle, and release enough Pokemon to earn Onix candy, using those to evolve their Onix once complete.

However, thanks to the previously mentioned Evolution Event going on, trainers can undergo a simple research task; capturing 5 Onix's, to earn a rare item called Metal Coat. Once earned, this item can be given to an Onix to immediately evolve it into a Steelix. Take advantage of this now because the event will be over Dec. 12!

Lastly, for the fortunate (or insanely dedicated), the option does exist to catch a Steelix in the wild. Good luck with that though, as the Pokemon doesn't appear commonly in many areas. Those hunting for Steelix should definitely keep an eye out for a shiny version with a slick gold finish to add some serious bragging rights to their lineup.
