Overwatch Anniversary 2021 Skins Have Neat Easter Eggs

Some eagle-eyed Overwatch fans and players have been making connections between the recently released skins and popular culture.

Blizzard announced that the Overwatch Anniversary 2021 event will run from Tuesday, May 18 through to Tuesday, June 8—three full weeks of celebratory content. Of course, what party would be complete without gifts and prizes? Players have the chance to earn five unique legendary skins for their favorite heroes for the duration of the event.

Among the top quirks pointed out by fans is the legendary "Junkfood" Junkrat skin and its similarities to the character King Candy from Disney's Wreck-It Ralph. The likeness is truly uncann-dy with his outfit resembling the character from waistcoat to its tiny crown.

All it's truly missing is the massive sugar-lace collar, but that would probably mess with player visibility more than rightfully necessary. Even his hairstyle is reminiscent of King Candy, pillowing more on the sides of his head than usual.

Additionally, his frag launcher supposedly fires what we can assume are in-universe candy brands such as "Sugar Crash" and "Kang-O Candy." However, the community is split between what these references could be.

Some believe they are noting the psychology myth of a "sugar rush" and possibly tying in the popular Australian marsupial, the kangaroo, respectively. Others hold fast to the Disney movie, believing they are attempts at wordplay with Sugar Rush the in-film racing game and a phonetic phrase meant to sound like "King of Candy" or, simply, "King Candy."

Other skins haven't been left out of the hype, however. Players have uncovered that "Funky" Baptiste plays a funk music riff when selecting him. Funk, itself, as a genre, has its roots in African American communities and culture.

The style was created by James Brown, lead singer of the 1960s band the Famous Flames. Funk would make its way around the nation in the next decade with several artists picking up its unique sound—including Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk) collective leader George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Rose Royce, William Earl "Bootsy" Collins, and "Queen of Funk" Chaka Khan.

"Black Cat" Sombra is believed to be a mix of the notorious DC cat burglar, Catwoman. With Sombra's reputation as an underground hacker and possible thief of classified information, a few have drawn a direct link between her and the Batman villain. Additionally, Catwoman is sometimes known to carry claw-tipped gloves and a jet black bullwhip while clad in a black eye mask.

As the event goes on, we expect more discoveries like these to come to light.
