What is a Mega Raid in Pokemon GO? It's a trainer's best hope at mega-evolving their favorite Pokemon.

Niantic Labs introduced the long-awaited mega-evolution function into their immensely popular AR mobile title, Pokemon GO, on Aug. 27. Mega evolution was one of the most highly sought after mechanics in the game after its debut in the Generation IV main series games and show. Traditionally, mega-evolution unlocks extra power, stats, and changes to the chosen Pokemon's physical appearance.

In Pokemon GO, trainers need to collect mega energy in order to gain mega-evolution.

What is a Mega Raid in Pokemon GO

A mega raid, in simplest terms, is a raid that features a mega boss Pokemon and gives off mega energy upon completion. The quicker a mega boss is defeated, the more energy will be given to the assembled trainers.

Trainers can receive somewhere between 35-55 units of mega energy per raid. Most report it takes around five or six raids to collect the amount of energy needed to evolve.

Each raid operates at the same level of difficulty as a class five-star tier raid. Unfortunately, that means there will be no solo-ing here. Currently, the primarily mega boss Pokemon that can be encountered in raids are the Generation I Kanto region starters: Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise.
