Which PlayStation Plus tier should you choose?

As officially announced by Sony Tuesday, the long-suspected overhaul of their PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services is set to arrive in June. Previously referred to as Project Spartacus, now that Sony's answer to Xbox Game Pass has been revealed, here's a breakdown of which membership options players should choose within the new PlayStation Plus system.

PlayStation Plus Membership Tiers Explained

PlayStation Plus Essential ($9.99 monthly / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 yearly)

  • Two monthly downloadable games
  • Exclusive discounts
  • Cloud storage for saved games
  • Online multiplayer access

For those looking to keep the exact same benefits that PS Plus has offered up to this point, the Essential tier is for you. PlayStation Plus Essential will remain the exact same price as it currently is for PlayStation Plus members in the United States.

PlayStation Plus Extra ($14.99 monthly / $39.99 quarterly / $99.99 yearly)

  • Provides all the benefits from the Essential tier
  • Adds a catalog of up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games — including games from Sony's PlayStation Studios catalog and third-party partners (available for download)

The first step up from the traditional PS Plus service, PlayStation Plus Extra is for those who are also looking to download and play more-recent hit titles, such as Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11 and Returnal. Of course, as things stand, none of the tiers in the revamped PlayStation Plus system will include new first-party titles on day one, so keep that in mind as well.

PlayStation Plus Premium ($17.99 monthly / $49.99 quarterly / $119.99 yearly)

  • Provides all the benefits from Essential and Extra tiers
  • Adds up to 340 additional games including: PS3 games (available via cloud streaming), and a catalog of classic games (available in both streaming and download options) from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations
  • Offers cloud streaming access (via PS4, PS5 and PC) for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available
  • Ability to play time-limited game trials for select titles

Finally, we have the Premium tier, which includes all of the aforementioned bonuses from the lower tiers, but also adds a catalog of retro games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PSP. Unfortunately, it does appear that the PS3 titles will only be able to be played via cloud streaming for the foreseeable future, but this is as close as it gets at the moment for those looking to have access to the largest PlayStation catalog on offer as well as Sony's cloud streaming services.
