9 Kings scraps level cap and frees up perk selection in latest update
By Marco Wutz

Sad Socket has implemented the meta progression overhaul it promised on the 9 Kings roadmap, greatly expanding the freedom of players when it comes to selecting perks for upcoming runs.
Instead of a pre-determined pool of perks for each king, players now get nine perk slots for every monarch, which they can fill with any perks they have unlocked — and with 52 perks being added to the game in the same update, there are more than 80 to choose from.
Every king still features perks that are only usable with them, but universal and rainbow perks can be selected regardless of monarch. The King of Nothing’s previous line-up of perks has become part of the universal roster, so he’s been equipped with a new array of unique perks.
The developers have also scrapped the level cap and made it so that new perks can be earned with each level-up.
Players who’ve already earned a high level won’t see their progress being reset, of course. They will simply find that they already have unlocked a ton of fresh options to play around with.
9 Kings has been rebalanced in the update as well, with the early game generally becoming a little tougher and Endless Mode ramping up its difficulty a little more slowly.
