Switch 2 pricing changes still an option, Nintendo says

It all depends on the tariffs.

Nintendo is keeping its options open in regards to potential Switch 2 price increases, even after deciding against pricing changes for the console’s initial release in the United States.

Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s president, told Yahoo Japan (as translated via Genki) that “if the assumptions regarding tariffs change significantly, we would like to consider what price adjustments we should make and implement them after considering various factors.”

According to him, “the top priority is to quickly popularize the Switch 2 hardware.” This explains why Nintendo decided against immediate price increases, as higher upfront costs could hinder the console from gaining market share at a speedy rate.

Of course, Nintendo fans in the United States didn’t quite get away scott-free, as the company did increase the prices of many accessories to offset tariff costs. It also amped up the prices of first-party titles like Mario Kart, which caused much controversy.

The current console generation is going against the historical trend of machines getting cheaper over time with Microsoft and Sony either maintaining initial Xbox Series X|S and PS5 prices or increasing them. This means that early adopters, who usually pay more to get first dibs on new hardware, have been getting the cheapest deals so far in this generation — and that’s a lesson Nintendo fans should take note of, especially with the potential chaos of more tariffs looming.

Nintendo already warned customers of potential Switch 2 supply issues due to high demand, issuing a cautious estimate of 15 million sold units by the end of March 2026. It might be a bit difficult to get your hands on a Switch 2 quickly, but could save you a lot of money.
