Total War has just delivered its strongest quarter in years despite content drought

Hunger for the series remains strong as big announcements draw near.

It’s a big year for Creative Assembly’s Total War series: It’s not only celebrating its 25th birthday, but the developer wants to reveal several new Total War games in December, confirming what is to be expected from the franchise in the next couple of years. However, with the recent delay of Tides of Torment – the next Total War: Warhammer 3 DLC – it’s been a very quiet year in terms of actual content releases so far.

Despite this drought, Total War just delivered its strongest quarter in regards to sales in years. According to SEGA’s latest financial report, the series sold 910,000 copies in the three months that ended on June 30, 2025. That’s 600,000 units more than two years ago and 380,000 units more than last year, when viewing the same time windows.

Even comparing it to other quarters, the most recent one has the upper hand: In the past two years, Q3 of FY2025 was hitherto the strongest quarter with 770,000 copies sold — it is now firmly in second place.

Among SEGA’s top four franchises, Total War sold second-best last quarter, following Persona (1 million sales) and beating both Sonic (770,000 sales) and Like a Dragon (690,000 sales).

SEGA deemed repeat sales of its catalog as below expectations last quarter, but Total War has clearly outperformed its usual numbers, showing the IP’s value and staying power at times that see relatively few new releases.

Unfortunately for Total War fans, SEGA did not spoil any surprises or announcements about the upcoming plans for the franchise, so enthusiasts will still need to wait on Creative Assembly for that.

Total War: Warhammer 3 – Tides of Torment is set to bring Dechala, Sayl, and Aislinn into the fray, reinforcing the Daemons of Slaanesh, Norscans, and High Elves later this year.
