MatPat shocked the world yesterday when he announced his impending retirement from YouTube.

Matthew "MatPat" Patrick, the mastermind behind the ultra-popular YouTube channel, The Game Theorists, is stepping back from the platform he and his wife, Stephanie, created over 13 years ago. Over the last decade, the channel blew up as gamers from all over the world joined MatPat and Stephanie as they broke down and theorized over video game lore. Since 2011, the channel garnered 18.5 million subscribers and over three billion views.

MatPat Retires From YouTube

MatPat announced his retirement from YouTube in his latest upload on The Game Theorists channel. The video, titled "Goodbye Internet," features the beloved content creator as he details the reasons for leaving YouTube.

"We knew that we couldn't do this forever," MatPat explains. "For as much as I love you and I love overthinking things and I love theorizing, I don't love late nights."

"I miss the days where I can just sit down on the couch with [Stephanie] and play video games and it's not for content," he furthers. "Or I am playing a game and I'm not thinking about what theories will come out of that."

Fortunately, just because MatPat is retiring from YouTube does not mean his channels are going down. Instead, he will be handing them off "to someone else" when the time comes. MatPat's last video will go live on Mar. 9, 2024.
