For those looking to remedy the issue as soon as possible, here's a breakdown of how to fix the "change display name" error in Modern Warfare 2.
Modern Warfare 2 'Change Display Name' Error Screen: How to Fix
Unfortunately, it appears the launch of the Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Early Access period has been spoiled for many players so far as once they boot up the game, it tells them that their current Activision ID display name is not allowed and that they must change it in order to play. It does seem this issue is mostly affecting those on PC via both Steam and Battle.net.
Ultimately, it does appear that this is simply a bug on Activision's end as this simply wasn't a major issue during the beta. Of course, Activision has been looking to beef up its anti-toxicity measures with a new code of conduct and whatnot, however, it seems that a lot of accounts are being hit with this error by mistake.
At the time of writing, there doesn't seem to be a surefire fix. However, some users are reporting that after restarting the game multiple times, they are able to get in.
Others are reporting that they try to change their Activision IDs anyway, but aren't able to do so because they get an error saying, "you do not currently have a rename token available," even though they do. In this case, other players are saying that they simply restarted the game and tried to rename their accounts multiple times until it worked and let them in.
