Some Tribes of Midgard players are losing life and limb to Fimbulwinter, the infinite winter state, before they have a chance to engage with the giant wolf, Fenrir.

Tribes of Midgard puts a spin on the traditional Viking town crafting simulator by imposing a strict and deadly time limit. During the Wolf Saga, players need to vanquish the giant wolf boss, Fenrir, within a certain length of time in order to keep the entire world from freezing over completely. If they fail to do so, the Fimbulwinter will come in full force, blanketing the world in an endless sheet of ice and snow—and killing them in the process.

Here's how to avoid and survive the threat of Fimbulwinter.

Tribes of Midgard: Best Tips for Fimbulwinter

Fimbulwinter is basically a world condition that causes longer nights—much like the actual season of winter. As Fimbulwinter creeps closer to the village, the player will be forced to survive longer nights while engaging with larger amounts of Helthings just to keep the game going.

On night 14, Fimbulwinter will reach its peak and plunge the world into endless darkness. This "endless night mode" inflicts cold damage to the player and NPCs regardless of their position on the map. Unless they have sufficient cold resistance or healing, the player will fall prey to Fimbulwinter in time—especially if they're trying to survive on their own.

The best way to avoid Fimbulwinter completely frosting over the world is to either keep two steps ahead of it with village progression or slay a giant and use the Bifrost to flee the realm.

Avoiding Fimbulwinter

To avoid Fimbulwinter, players should complete all their quests and objectives before night 13 and then take the Bifrost out of the realm. This requires them to kill at least on Jotunn in order for the bridge to open. We've listed a few benchmarks players should hit in order to stay on track before night 14:

  • By Night 1: Build Tinker, Blacksmith, upgrade NPCs if possible
  • By Night 2: Build gates to the village to help protect against Helthings
  • By Night 3: Survive your first Blood Moon
  • By Night 4: Slay the first Jotunn (Bifrost out if desired)
  • By Night 5: Explore Smokey Highlands, complete Hideouts
  • By Night 6: Upgrade gates, build Archery Towers
  • By Night 7: Slay the second Jotunn
  • By Night 8: Upgrade NPCs
  • By Night 9: Survive the second Blood Moon
  • By NIght 10: Finish up objectives, complete dungeons, etc.
  • By Night 11: Prepare to slay Fenrir
  • By Night 12: Find and repair the bridge to Fenrir
  • By Night 13: Slay Fenrir
  • By Night 14: Bifrost out

Obviously, between major checkpoints, players should be farming resources and healing their Ygdrasil seed with Souls.

Using the Bifrost to escape the realm will unlock the Seer class.

Surviving Fimbulwinter

Surviving Fimbulwinter is near-impossible alone. NPCs won't last long against the endless onslaught of Helthings—and neither will the solo player, for that matter. The minimum amount of players necessary to stay alive is three: two to hold the Helthings off and the extra one (or more) to gather resources for repairs, crafting, and Jotunn hunting.

We recommend following the same checkpoints listed above. Though, with more than one player, it's possible the village may progress far quicker than that.

Players who make it through night 15 will unlock the Warden class.
