The Resident Evil series has seen a resurgence in popularity during the past decade. Along with new releases such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the upcoming Resident Evil Village, remakes of classic games in the franchise have been huge hits with fans. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 have both received remakes, so Resident Evil 4 could be next on the horizon.

While Capcom has yet to make an official announcement, it is widely believed that a Resident Evil 4 remake is currently in development. M-Two, the studio behind the Resident Evil 3 remake, was expected to handle the project, but Capcom will now have more involvement. This is due to creative differences that led to a complete overhaul of production.

The Resident Evil 4 remake's release date was originally expected to be in 2022. Now with the complications faced during production, this is believed to be pushed back to 2023. This may explain why Capcom has been quiet on a reveal, especially given that a Resident Evil showcase was recently held in January.

Resident Evil 4 is perhaps the series' most popular and critically acclaimed entry. Released in 2005, it won numerous Game of the Year awards and is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time. It is considered to be trailblazing in many ways and laid the groundwork for the third-person shooter genre.

Resident Evil 4 introduced the offset camera angle that has become standard for third-person action games. The game featured an innovative over-the-shoulder camera angle that allowed the playable character to be visible while not obscuring any of the action in front of them. Games such as Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, Uncharted, and many more would adopt this camera perspective.

Resident Evil 4 is also the first game in the series to make the shift from a survival horror game to an action shooter. This transition abandoned the genre that the previous games had helped create, but was lauded for its high-tense action and visceral imagery. This focus on action influenced many subsequent horror games such as Bioshock, Dead Space, and The Last of Us.

A remake for Resident Evil 4 is all but certain, though its release date is left to question. In the meantime, Resident Evil Village releases on May 7.
