Total War: Warhammer 3’s Steam reviews swing back to negative as fan frustrations boil over
By Marco Wutz

Creative Assembly’s recent history is one of stark ups and downs where Total War: Warhammer 3 is concerned. Coming out of a slump following a string of controversies last year, the company had just about managed to turn around public opinion as well as the Total War series’ sales this year, but in by now almost typical fashion managed to squander its good hand by repeating its past mistakes.
A recent update for Total War: Warhammer 3 focusing on Tomb Kings and Lizardmen included a bug that’s causing some AI factions to fall into an essentially vegetative state and do nothing for the entire game, which obviously doesn’t make for riveting gameplay. The fact that users warned CA about this bug during the update’s beta test and the developers didn’t fix it despite promises to the contrary ignited the powder keg of dormant frustrations with the studio.
Steam users have been bombarding the game with negative reviews, once again resetting the overall reviews to “Mixed” and the recent reviews to “Mostly Negative” as a result.
A statement by CA with an in-depth explanation of what’s been happening behind the scenes did little to calm the waters, despite being quite transparent and reasonable.
What fans feel most frustrated about isn’t the introduction of a new bug anyway — stuff like that is unavoidable from time to time. People are fed up with the studio’s nonchalant attitude towards affairs like this. The unshakeable trust that the developers will inevitably fix issues is no longer there for many players, as they are getting the impression that CA is either unwilling or simply unable to get things right without constant external pressure being applied, which is exhausting for both sides.
It doesn’t help that the community has been through this cycle a couple of times already and no matter how much the developers apologize and promise to be better in the future, history keeps repeating itself. As such, the current blow-up – which seems like an overreaction to some – has been a long time coming.
A new DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3, Tides of Torment, is expected to be released later this year following its delay. A wave of future Total War games will be revealed during a showcase in December 2025.
